What we do

Alpha House is an addiction recovery community addressing the needs of self-identified men and non-binary people aged 18 and up. At Alpha House we believe that recovery from addiction and mental illnesses must address every aspect of the individual. As a result, our programs address physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs, all in an effort to support the individual’s recovery from addiction.

Alpha House is a 4-month post-treatment Residential Program with the sole purpose of re-integration through educational and vocational counselling, coupled with 24-hour Addictions and Mental Health Counselling support and relapse prevention tools.

Alpha House has been helping those who suffer from addiction in the city of Toronto since 1972.

Many refer to Alpha House as second stage treatment, as clients are given the freedom to work and typically have an acute sense of life stability prior to admission. The residents of Alpha House support their recovery through an abstinence-based recovery program. This program includes a variety of modalities, which residents are free to choose for themselves.

The Alpha House program offers a unique blend of guidance and support in areas of the greatest concern to our clients. These include upgrading of one's education, job searching, life skills, one-on-one counselling, and living within a community and meeting one's obligations to it. Our facility is staffed 24 hours a day by trained counsellors and specialists. The staff facilitates regular meetings and groups through the week. These include the following:

  • 24/7 onsite counselling support.

  • Registered Psychotherapists and/or Certified Addiction Counsellors.

  • Psychiatric and Medical referrals.

  • Opiate Replacement Program.

  • Onsite pre-admission groups, Mondays at 10:30 a.m.

  • Relapse Prevention drop-in group, Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m.

  • Co-Dependant's Anonymous meeting, Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

  • Addiction Education Group with Dr. Jake Bobrowski, Addiction Medicine Specialist, Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

  • Smart Recovery meeting, Fridays at 7 p.m.

  • Full-time day programs offered through several offsite referral agencies.

  • Stop with Addictions Nicotine Replacement Clinic offered free to all clients through out their stay.

  • Alumni Aftercare program.

Alpha House is a large house that accommodates a maximum of 25 in-house residents and supports an additional 50+ non-residents, as well as keeping the door open and always welcoming Alpha House Alumni into the facility. Treatment and housing all take place at the Alpha House facility in Toronto, where space for meetings and other services is available on-site. The bedrooms include twin beds, and there are six bathrooms in the facility. There is also a living room, dining room, kitchen, TV room with a computer for job searching, a meeting room, and a backyard for residents’ use.

Meals vary greatly, but all lunches and dinners are home-cooked and served in a sit-down setting, unless the client is off-site working. In that case, they are encouraged to pack their own lunch. Clients take turns preparing dinner each night, which consists of hearty meals like pizza, burgers, and roasts with healthy salads. The kitchen is also stocked with fruits and vegetables delivered regularly, as well as a variety of basic pantry items.

As a second stage treatment facility, residents are allowed to go out into the community for work or engage in recreational activities, as well as having overnight passes after completing one month. Alpha House strongly supports alumni of their program and offers aftercare, as well as welcoming past residents who find themselves in crisis in regular group sessions.

To foster life beyond the program, Alpha House has built partnerships with an extensive network of halfway houses and transitional or supportive housing agencies and can offer referrals to medical and psychiatric professionals for clients that need additional support.
